"Serendipity", a noun which google defines as the occurence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial ways", is the theme that defines Mithil and Reena's story.
That is how a somewhat asocial Mumbai lad Mithil who wanted to see the world and a quiet Mumbai girl who wanted to see Europe end up in the same apartment building half the world away in the middle of a chaotic pandemic.
All the stars which had to align for us to meet are too numerous to mention here. So not to bore you with details, let's just simplify things a bit. Mithil and Reena met in Troy where both of them were pursuing doctoral degrees, coincidentally under same thesis advisor. Mithil likes to play tabla and Reena wanted to learn Sitar. So that's how they connected outside the campus. The ease of their first informal encounter remains with them every day.
There are many ways to like a person (and Reena can vouch for many reasons to dislike them too!). We continue to find those ways every day. Hiking in Adirondacks, visiting cities, camping to see stars, kayaking till our hands are sore, patiently finding movies that only Mithil likes, reminding someone to not slurp the tea and the other to not bite their nails. These are just some of the things we do together to find our selves in each other. Its a slow realization but a sure one where we know we are not alike each other but surprisingly complemental. As we navigate the maze of everyday life, deep down we know, the peace we bring each other makes everything worth it.
Now Mithil has graduated and stays in NJ and Reena is close to graduation too. Through thick and thins they have maintained the same ease which first attracted them to each other. Mithil likes to pointificate at Reena and Reena likes to yell at Mithil. And when neither is the case, they play tabla and sitar together. Here's wishing this musical cacophony of life continues for many years to come.
